The Berlin Police Department Bicycle Patrol was established in 1995 by then Chief Prentice “Skip” Lyons. It was done to promote community policing in the Bay and Flower Street area. For several years officers were assigned to the unit as their primary duty, proactively patrolling through the high drug areas. The unit was very successful but due to manpower shortages and personnel changes, it became a volunteer unit. Officers can ride bicycles if their shift is covered by another officer. The Berlin Police Department uses bicycles for special events, traffic control, crowd control, and criminal enforcement if coverage permits.
